Annual Report: 2012

It all begins with an idea.

167 Volunteers engaged with Community Partners this year!

This year marked our 26th year in serving Bay Area nonprofits and it was a big growth year for HBS Community Partners. We completed 17 projects and launched 10 new projects, recruiting a record 167 volunteers. This year, we introduced a new format for helping nonprofits with 2-hour Brainstorming Sessions. This attracted many new volunteers to Community Partners who were interested in learning more and contributing at a lighter level of effort. Alumni were also invited to explore opportunities on nonprofit boards through a new partnership with the Volunteer Center of San Francisco’s Board Match. 100 alumni signed up to meet and learn about 150 nonprofits in the Bay Area all looking for new members for their Board of Directors.

We also expanded our Steering Committee with eight new members (see "Steering Committee Members and Openings") to help us achieve our goal of reaching more nonprofits and more volunteers. In the fall, we moved to a seasonal launch process that often included two projects, all at once, giving alumni a variety of projects to choose from including nonprofits involved in education, the arts, college access programs, youth sports and community service. Our clients covered territory ranging from Sonoma County to Santa Cruz County. And our volunteers ranged from the Class of 1965 to 2009.

It was a great year for us as we continued to spread the goodwill that our volunteers create in the community and amongst each other. We hope to get even more alumni involved with HBS Community Partners this next year with many more meaningful and impactful projects and opportunities to make a difference in their community.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.

Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
