HBSCP 2013

Year in Review

187 Volunteers engaged and 38 Nonprofits Served!

In our 27th year of serving HBS Alumni and Bay Area nonprofits, we delivered strategic consulting to 38 nonprofit clients. These included social services, youth services, and education organizations. Project themes ranged from 30-100 hours and included market analysis, financial modeling, expansion planning, and executive coaching.

Last year, we launched 2-hour brainstorming sessions to meet the needs of some clients who benefit from shorter-term assistance. These sessions provide focused bursts of ideas and feedback to generate solutions for specific nonprofit business challenges. One client who received a session has since returned for a full-scale pro bono project!

We also helped six alumni get involved on nonprofit boards—and our interns (generously funded by HBS) introduced many nonprofits to our work. Based on pilot workshops from last year, we launched joint board-executive director leadership training. We also hosted events focused on alumni careers in the nonprofit and community sectors who are all recruiting for their board of directors. Much of our recruitment is done through face-to-face outreach and the HBS Alumni Career Services team. Last year, we also hosted our largest panel at the HBS Global Alumni Conference and were selected to present nationally at the HBS Association Community Team (ACT) of Harvard’s Social Enterprise Initiative.

This included regional leaders from NY, LA, SoCal, Seattle, and Chicago, and representatives from HBS’s Social Enterprise Initiative and Student Club. We continue to build national partnerships and share our best practices. We are also now included in the LinkedIn Board Match database.

Over 300 attendees joined us at various events such as our first regional forum for alumni volunteers and alumni interested in nonprofits. We also collaborated with other HBS Association programs and introduced “Board Mixers” with Women’s Circles and career panels.

We continue to grow and strengthen our community. This year’s program involved 187 volunteers—and we couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you!

We hope we can inspire you to get involved in some way—whether it’s a project or in your own board work.
